More about the IDC Course Structure
There are 2 parts to the Instructor Development Course (IDC): Assistant Instructor (AI) and Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI). Professionals who hold an Instructor rating from another organisation may be accepted directly into the OWSI. This recognizes prior instructor training and provides a path to becoming a PADI Instructor.
The IDC consists of several parts but the main focus is on becoming a great teacher and dive educator. As a Divemaster you will have already gained some insight into the dive industry. The IDC gives you the tools and techniques needed to pass on the knowledge you have already acquired.
Most dive courses are split into three areas of learning:
- Classroom
- Confined water
- Open water
These are reflected within the training:
We will start by showing you different ways to explain your knowledge by working on your classroom teaching techniques. We then move to the pool and demonstrate the most effective way to teach these skills. Along with this, we show you how to build & organize a sequence of skills into individual training sessions.
Because the pool and classroom are familiar spaces, we will spend the early part of the IDC here. Whilst allowing lots of scope for repeats and additional practice.
From here we move on to open water, where you apply your training skills to a more challenging environment. You will also learn how to manage students in realistic diving conditions.
Once familiar with the teaching system it’s time to put it into practice. Allowing plenty of time for skill and knowledge presentation practice. Instructor trainers will give feedback before moving on to the next session.
What else does the IDC cover?
The IDC also covers detailed information of each PADI course you will be able to teach. You will learn the standards, sequence requirements, scheduling options and varying course components. In addition, we cover Risk Management and local rules for running your training activities safely.
An IDC is about your development. We will ensure that you understand how and where to improve during the program. Our aim is for our candidates to be the best Instructors possible, and we will give you all the support you need to get there!
